What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a popular and exciting treatment for skin rejuvenation. It involves using a granular substance on the face which precisely removes the top layer of skin, leaving younger smoother skin that you can immediately feel.

"...microdermabrasion is certainly not an overly complex treatment..."

The relatively painless procedure uses an air-powered flow of fine corundum crystals (one hundred microns in size), which exfoliate the outer, uneven, thickened, pigmented, dead cell layer of skin, revealing a fresh, new layer. These crystals literally "erase" superficial imperfections and sun damage, without damaging the skin's integrity.

The outer layer is the culprit, which makes the skin look dull or old. Often this is a very thick layer and you see and feel a difference immediately. The result: a smoother, more youthful appearance. Results of this method improve with regular treatments 7 to 10 days apart for less than 2 months.

What is Microdermabrasion used for?

By controlling the power of the spray, anything from a gentle buffing of the skin to deeper exfoliation can be achieved. The treatment is ideal for:

  • removing stretch marks
  • removing pigmentation
  • removing acne scarring
  • lesion and scar formation
  • treating fine lines
  • treating uneven skin tone
  • body treatment
  • general rejuvenation of the skin
  • removing comedones
  • treating ingrown hairs

Is Microdermabrasion painful?

The treatment is relatively painless. You will feel a tingling sensation. In a course of 6 or more treatments, we would initially start on a mild setting and we would gradually increase the intensity of the treatment as we progressed.

This exercise is used to accustom yourself and your skin to the treatment and help reduce undue stress on your skin.

How long does a Microdermabrasion treatment take?

Your first appointment takes approximately 45 minutes for your first treatment (which includes a detailed consultation) and approximately 30 minutes on subsequent treatments.

Is taking only one Microdermabrasion treatment sufficient?

It is highly recommended that a series of treatments will give you optimum and lasting results. Having just the one Microdermabrasion is best used as maintenance.

Will I need special care after a Microdermabrasion treatment?

After your treatment, your risk of getting sunburnt is increased. This is due to the treatment exposing younger skin, which would normally be covered by the top layer of dead skin cells.

We highly recommend using the Dermalogica or MD Formulations SPF 30+ products immediately after your treatment to prevent getting sunburnt. These products contain ingredients specifically designed for sensitive skin.

How much does Microdermabrasion cost?

Costs will depend on the area being treated.
